A calorie is a unit of energy. A gram of carbohydrates has 4 calories, a gram of protein has 4 calories, and a gram of fat has 9 calories. Foods are a compilation of these three building blocks. Our bodies “burn” the calories via enzymes which break the carbohydrates into glucose and other sugars, the fats into glycerol and fatty acids and the proteins into amino acids.
How Much Do You Need?
The amount of calories your body requires each day is based on the energy your body requires to perform all of it’s vital activities, along with your level of physical activity. An active person burns more calories, and therefore needs to consume more to stay healthy.
